INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS
RESEARCH

The unique independent record label '4AD' is a record label within the UK, found in 1980 by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent. The record label has started with both of them but ended up which only being partnered with one, when Kent sold his shares to Watts-Russell.
The initial plan for this independent record label was purely to have a line up for the other record label 'Beggars Banquet' which therefore secured a place at this label after being at 4AD as a concrete placement for the artists to begin from and enlarge gradually. The record label very gradually grew as many artists got signed with them such as Throwing Muses and Pixies, with their American rock music.
How does the company work within the music industry?
The company in the 80's would sign with now big artists who recorded with them with varies 4AD studio sessions. With this being said, in 1987 'Pump up the volume' by the artists M/A/R/R/S became a big hit leading to it being the global No.1 during this time period.
In terms of distribution, 4AD was mostly based in the United Kingdom but also connected on the basis of other different countries such as Virgin records for France, Nippon Columbia in Japan and finally Vertigo Records interlinked with Canada. The fact that a small independent company distributes globally enhances the fact that it wants to grow as a company internationally and nationally, so many people know about it as well as listen to the music presented in this industry.
Audience?
It was known that 4AD signed with the genre for American Rock music, therefore it was mostly targeted for Teenagers and adults as they were the audience that were most likely to listen to this sort of music. As this was an independent record label they didn't have enough money to be funded for a exquisite music video, which therefore also led it to be a PG right music video. Target audience is quite important because of the fact that artists are the one making music and they should be the ones enjoying it. 4AD isn't like a record label such as universal music where they have quite inappropriate graphic shown such as sex & drugs.
